Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo: We want to see students “engaging in civil disagreement."

Columbia SIPA Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo and Princeton School of Public and International Affairs Dean Amaney Jamal want to see students “engaging in civil disagreement, too. We want them to ask questions about the history, the context.”

The two Deans came together on stage in November 2023 after their New York Times commentary, “The Discourse Is Toxic. Universities Can Help.” They expanded on their ideas, strategies, and recommendations for discussing complex, charged topics within academic settings, as well as the challenges–and importance–of fostering dialogue amidst polarized discourse.
